Construction of the cocoon

Martin Kaufmann on the idea and realization of the "Kokon" exhibition space

As a graduate engineer for printing technology, you understand a lot about typography, photography and the right choice of production and design processes. But how do you present sensitive portrait photography and strong texts in public space so that they draw people's attention, maybe even touch them. They should not be ordinary places, no rooms with walls and solid structures, but open and clear, visible and accessible to everyone at any time. A public and transparent exhibition space that is mobile, that gives access and protection to a sensitive art form. Of course, "The White Thread" as the motif of the exhibition pushed itself more and more clearly to the fore in the search for forms and structures in nature and technology. At a good friend's house I had seen a simple lamp, round with a few dents, transparent through a fabric, with filigree metal struts. Too technical and not very organic, but it stuck in my head anyway. And it came true again, nature is the best stimulus and mold maker, it had to be a cocoon. Transparent and vulnerable. Strong and defensive. This room is intended to protect 20 large-format portraits of women, 20 sensitive texts and to give the idea of peaceful, unprejudiced coexistence a safe place. In the best case, this room should be the birthplace for new thoughts. So much for the considerations. That was the form, but not yet a showroom. A model made of metal wires and thin fabric was created at the kitchen table. Architecture and statics were added. Which materials suit this art project, the form and how do we connect this with the portraits? We started the construction together with the engineers and structural engineers Jürgen Bialozyt and Phillip Röder. Many months and reflections later, our ideas took on concrete outlines. A construction, independent and detached from places and circumstances, an exhibition space in public space with an extraordinary form and association was born.
